Managing Your Health

Mental & Behavioral Health Care

Mental health is health. Anxiety that keeps you up at night, depression that makes it hard to get through the day, stress that has settled into your body as physical symptoms — these are real medical concerns, and they deserve real attention.

At Gilbert Center, behavioral health is woven into how we care for every patient. We screen for mental health conditions as a routine part of primary care, treat many conditions directly, and connect patients with the right specialists when more intensive support is needed — all without the barriers that too often keep people from getting help.

Conditions We Support

Mental and behavioral health covers a wide range of experiences. We provide evaluation, diagnosis, and ongoing care for:

Conditions We Evaluate and Treat

  • Depression — including major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, and seasonal depression
  • Anxiety disorders — generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, and health anxiety
  • ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) — in adolescents and adults
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Grief and adjustment disorders — responses to loss, major life changes, or difficult transitions
  • Postpartum depression and perinatal mood disorders
  • Insomnia and sleep disorders with a behavioral or psychological component
  • Stress-related physical symptoms — headaches, gastrointestinal complaints, fatigue, and others
  • Substance use concerns — screening, brief counseling, and referral to appropriate programs

For conditions requiring a higher level of psychiatric care — such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or complex trauma — we coordinate warm referrals to psychiatrists and mental health specialists and remain involved in your overall care.

Your Visit

How We Approach Mental Health Care

Integrated With Your Primary Care
You shouldn't have to go to a separate provider every time a mental health concern comes up. Because behavioral health is part of how we practice primary care, your provider can address anxiety, depression, or stress in the same visit where we're also discussing your blood pressure or diabetes. Your mental and physical health are connected — your care team should be too.

Routine Screening
We screen for depression, anxiety, and other behavioral health concerns as a standard part of wellness visits and chronic disease management. Many patients are surprised to find that a conversation they'd been putting off for months can happen naturally within a regular appointment — without having to specifically "make an appointment about mental health."

Medication Management
For many conditions, medication is an effective part of treatment. We prescribe and manage antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, ADHD medications, and sleep aids, and we monitor how you're responding over time. We take a thoughtful approach — starting low, adjusting gradually, and checking in regularly.

Counseling and Therapy Referrals
Medication alone isn't always the right answer, and for many patients, therapy is more effective than medication or works best alongside it. We maintain relationships with licensed therapists, psychologists, and counselors in the community and can provide warm referrals to connect you with the right person for your needs and insurance.

Crisis Support and Coordination
If you or someone you care for is experiencing a mental health crisis, contact us or go to the nearest emergency room. We can help coordinate care and connect you with appropriate crisis resources. You are never on your own in navigating a difficult moment.

Every Stage

Mental Health Across the Lifespan

Mental health needs look different at different stages of life, and we address them accordingly:

Care at Every Age

  • Children and adolescents — ADHD evaluation, anxiety and depression in teens, adjustment concerns, and behavioral health referrals for younger patients
  • Adults — depression, anxiety, work and relationship stress, major life transitions, and burnout
  • Perinatal and postpartum — screening and support for mood changes during and after pregnancy
  • Older adults — depression and anxiety that often go unrecognized in this population, as well as the grief and isolation that can come with aging
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Not always. For many concerns, we can begin evaluation and treatment right here as part of your primary care. If you need a therapist or psychiatrist, we'll help connect you — and in most cases, a referral from your primary care provider helps with insurance coverage and getting seen sooner.

You can start anywhere. Tell your provider you've been struggling, that you haven't felt like yourself, that something feels off — any of that is enough to open the conversation. We ask about mental health routinely because we know it's not always easy to bring up first. There is no wrong way to start.

Yes. Your health information is protected the same way all medical records are. Mental health documentation follows the same privacy standards as any other part of your chart. If you have specific questions about what is shared and with whom — for example, with an employer or insurance company — ask your provider and we'll walk you through how it works.

This is a normal part of the process, and we want to hear about it. Medication response varies from person to person, and finding the right fit sometimes takes more than one try. Never stop a psychiatric medication abruptly without talking to us first — we'll work through any adjustments together.

Yes. Many mental health follow-up visits and medication management appointments are well-suited to telehealth. For initial evaluations, we may prefer an in-person visit to give us a fuller picture. Ask about telehealth options when you schedule.
